Can Our Employees Really Say that on the Internet?

Question: We’re finding that some of our employees are talking about our company online on their personal computers. Can we discipline workers for violating policy if it’s done at home?

Answer: The short answer is yes, as long as the employee is making the information public.

If, for instance, an employee is sharing confidential information or gossiping about co-workers on a public site is violation of company policy, you can take action. So, if this is a concern, then formulate a policy by talking to your AdvanStaff Human Resources Department.

But finding a way to access information that wasn’t publicly displayed will get you into real trouble.

Also, complaining about wages, hours or working conditions is free speech protected under labor laws.

Your best bet: Remind employees that they’re their own worst reference.

Portraying themselves as dissatisfied employees will have repercussions, either from you or from potential future employers.
